Airport Security

Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation - Traveler's Tips, including lists of items allowed in aircraft cabins and items prohibited.

Each local airport may interpret federal regulations differently, and may confiscate some items that are not on the FAA's list of banned items.  Be prepared.

  • Most airports suggest that you should arrive 2 hours early for a domestic flight and 3 hours early if any leg of your itinerary involves international travel.

  • U.S. airports currently scan laptops and mobile phones separately; pack them where you can get to them easily; take them out of their cases and place them in a bins, then pass them through the X-Ray machine.

  • Don't forget to bring a government issued ID card with your photograph on it, e.g. drivers license, passport.  You will need it to check bags, get boarding passes, pass through security checkpoint, and to board the plane.

  • You may be selected for a detailed search at any of the checkpoints.  Make sure your laptop battery is charged; you may be asked to boot your machine up at any time.  If you are transporting gifts, either do not wrap them (bring the wrapping with you and do the wrapping after you arrive), or choose a wrapping method that allows you to easily open the gift.

  • Limit the amount of metal on your person. Metal may be in belts, jewelry, shoes, etc.

  • You may be asked to remove your shoes while being searched.  Wear shoes that are easy to get on and off.
